Stop the Drip: 5 Simple Ways to Prevent Damp This Season

We’ve all seen it—the tell-tale patch of damp or the dreaded sight of mould blooming in a corner. As we talked about in our last post, catching damp early is crucial. But wouldn’t it be better if you could stop it before it even started?

The truth is, many of the causes of damp in our homes are entirely preventable. By making a few small, consistent changes to how you manage your home, you can keep your property dry, healthy, and structurally sound.

1. Ventilation is Your Best Friend

Condensation is the most common cause of damp in modern homes. When warm, moist air (from cooking, showering, or drying clothes) hits cold surfaces like windows or external walls, it turns into water.

  • The Fix: Make sure your trickle vents are open. When you’re cooking or showering, always keep the door closed and use an extractor fan—or crack a window.

2. Don’t Let Your Laundry Take Over

We’ve all been there during a rainy week—airers full of clothes in the living room or bedroom. Drying clothes indoors releases litres of moisture into the air.

  • The Fix: If you can, use a tumble dryer with an external vent. If you must dry indoors, do it in a room with the door closed and a window slightly open to let the moisture escape.

3. Give Your Walls “Room to Breathe”

We often push our sofas, wardrobes, and cabinets right up against external walls to save space. However, this stops air from circulating behind the furniture. If that wall is slightly cold, moisture will build up behind the unit, creating the perfect environment for mould.

  • The Fix: Try to leave a small gap (even just 5cm) between your furniture and external walls to allow air to flow.

4. Keep an Eye on the Exterior

Damp doesn’t just come from inside. Cracked render, broken guttering, or blocked downpipes can allow water to track directly into your brickwork or seep into your roof space.

  • The Fix: Take a walk around your property after a heavy rain shower. Look for overflowing gutters or water running down walls where it shouldn’t be. Catching a blocked gutter early is much cheaper than fixing water-damaged plaster inside.

5. Monitor Your Home’s “Health”

Sometimes, damp is structural and impossible to fix with ventilation alone. If you notice a damp patch that never dries out, a musty smell that won’t go away, or black mould returning even after you’ve cleaned it, it’s time to call in the professionals.

  • The Fix: Don’t wait for the problem to spread. A professional survey can identify if you have an issue like rising damp or failing damp-proof courses, which are much easier to fix when caught early.

Stay Dry, Stay Comfortable

Taking care of your home doesn’t have to be a full-time job. A little bit of awareness goes a long way in keeping your living space fresh and dry.
